Indoor plants are worth considering when you need something to lift your spirits and make you feel that the world is a wonderful place.
![]() The scope of indoor plants is anything from a few pots brightening up a dull corner, to a luxuriant garden room bringing freshness into the house. Indoor plants not only freshen up the air in the house, they also bring vibrancy and color, which raises the spirits of anyone in the vicinity. Indoor plants, while being very adaptable, need the same conditions as they would need if grown outside. The right temperature, light conditions, growing medium, water and food are very important, but in an indoor situation these things are often more easily monitored. Another point is that the indoor plants, because they are mobile, can be grouped according to the conditions they need. They can also be moved around if they are not thriving, until you find a spot where they do well.
Some indoor plants are grown just for their foliage, and this alone provides a lot of contrasts, as there are many different shapes, textures, patterns and colors. If you wish to have flowering plants indoors you also have a vast array to choose from, including simple little flowers, exotic orchids, fascinating cactus plants, winter bulbs and leaves masquerading as flowers, called bracts.
Size and Proportion. A mass grouping, or large plants in the house need a large open area or a big room, so as not to overwhelm the space. Examples of this would be tall climbers or baskets of spreading or trailing plants, or even a room divider constructed so that plants can climb through it.
Display. Different levels can be used to display your indoor plants to effect. Use a table top for small to medium groupings; shelves or ledges at or below eye level for individual display plants; and a position above eye level for trailing or cascading plants. There are several ways to group plants for display indoors. One way is to have each different type in a separate decorative pot and the display will then consist of the whole collection of pots and plants, all working in together. Another way is to have one plant in each pot, but then group all the pots in a large decorative container so that the individual pots aren’t seen. You could also plant up a large container with a variety of contrasting color, texture, pattern and shape. Summary. The final selection and display of indoor plants is a matter of personal judgment, always bearing in mind the needs of the plant. Try using them in conjunction with mirrors, different lighting and ornaments and hangings made from different materials. The Conch Planter pictured below, for instance, could be placed in the bathroom in front of a mirror with an arrangement of shells from the beach. When you get the arrangement right, your indoor plants will bring you a considerable amount of pleasure.
